PASSENGER LISTS TO AUSTRALIA
In the five years leading up to the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, countless thousands of British chose to leave these shores for a new life far from home. Many of these emigrants were destined for Australia and New Zealand.
Passenger lists exist in Australia and New Zealand showing the arrivals, and the British passenger lists held at the Public Record Office in Kew, England, show the departures from all ports in the UK and Ireland. Unless you already knew dates, places and names of ships, research among the passenger lists in any of those countries was difficult, time consuming and often fruitless.
None of the countries concerned has indexed lists in such a way that researchers can quickly find their ancestor's arrival. Few finding aids have existed and it has always been like searching for a needle in a haystack... UNTIL NOW!
DataMarine has indexed the passenger lists for the year 1910!
Our databases hold the names of ALL passengers sailing from Britain on ALL ships bound for Australian ports!
If your ancestor was not destined for Australia, READ ON! Our databases hold the names of ALL passengers on Australia bound vessels! Many of these passengers disembarked at ports en route for Australia... Many of them remained on board if the ship continued its passage as far as New Zealand!
Did your ancestor emigrate to Australia or New Zealand? To South Africa? Did they travel instead to France, Italy, Portugal, the Canary Islands, north African ports, Malta, Port Said, Aden, Indian ports, Hong Kong, Singapore..... the list goes on!
The British passenger lists are full of names! Not only emigrants to a new life, but businessmen and women, tourists and people returning 'home' after a visit back to the Old Country.
Check out the lists held here and see if your ancestor's name appears. This is just a TINY! fraction of the number of names on DataMarine's databases! If the person you are searching for does not appear here, contact DataMarine for information about our other search facilities.
The original copies of the passenger lists from which this information was extracted can be seen at the Public Record Office, Ruskin Avenue, Kew, England, in reference numbers BT27 689; 680; 673; 649. The information shown is given in good faith. Please remember that the original lists are in a very poor condition. The handwriting is faded and hard to read and the spelling of names may not be exactly what you expect ... when searching the lists here, you should include variations in spellings, and be aware that initials are particularly hard to decipher in many cases. Always double check the information with the original list - photocopies are available.
